Life is so busy sometimes that I have to grab snippets of time to do what any artist should be doing - art. But then I sit down at my desk, thinking I'm going to create something awesome, only to find... NOTHING. My mind is totally blank. The dreaded Artist's Block. What to do? Whether you're an artist that draws or paints or if writing is your thing, we all struggle with it sometimes. My Daughter is a writer and runs into the same thing - we discuss this often. It seems to me that there are different kinds of Block. One type is If you've already been on a roll, working away and suddenly - the flow stops. That may be a good time to get up and go make a sandwich or take a walk. But then there's THIS kind - can't even get started! Well, Mollie says she has found that just writing anything at all helps to jump start the creative process. So that's what I've started doing - just draw something – anything. If you're trying to accomplish something specific, try working on something that's different from that - a different style, different medium, etc. When I'm working, I usually like to start in pencil (with my eraser handy) and carefully draw something that's in my mind, and when it's what I want, I outline it in ink. But today, not knowing what to do, I decided to just pick up my trusty micron 000 pen and just go for it! Whatever comes out. Just quick sketchy lines and a scribble of color and - voila- now I feel like I can get somewhere! Works for me. Here are my quick sketchy daisies.
And here's one I did a few days ago - Girl with flowers, colored with Prismacolor colored pencils. Isn't she sweet?
What do you do to beat Artist/Writer's block?
